GAFCON and the Archbishop of Canterbury

October 7, 2013

The Archbishop of Canterbury will visit GAFCON primates just before the opening of GAFCON 2013 in Nairobi.

GAFCON Primates are holding a two day meeting, then 1200 leaders and lay people from the UK, Asia, Africa, the Pacific and South America will fly in to Nairobi for the Global Anglican Future Conference starting on Monday, October 21st.

GAFCON Chairman Eliud Wabukala invited Archbishop Justin Welby to send greetings to the conference and he indicated he was unable to do so in person because of commitments during the week. His office has since confirmed he will make a flying visit to speak with the Primates.

The general secretary of the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, Dr Peter Jensen, says "The Archbishop's decision to come to the Primates meeting is a recognition of the importance of such a large and significant gathering of Anglicans from around the world and he will be made very welcome." George Conger: Unforced Anglican errors from the Telegraph Article link below
...I should also add a disclaimer. I have written for the Telegraph as a freelancer, providing stories from overseas Anglican jamborees in years past. That having been said; the article is quite extraordinary. Below the headline and above the photo comes this statement:

The Archbishop of Canterbury is facing what could be the biggest challenge to his leadership so far as a more than 1,000 traditionalist clerics stage a summit expected to formalise the “fragmentation” of the of the worldwide Anglican church.

The story does not state its source for this claim. This may be due to this assertion not being true. The conference scheduled for 21-26 Oct 2013 at All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi is the second Global Anglican Futures Conference (GAFCON). The claim that this will be Archbishop Welby’s “biggest challenge” and may “formalise the ‘fragmentation’” of the Anglican Communion is ludicrous.

Let me put it another way — it is simply untrue. The article admits as much when it goes on to say the Anglican Communion has been fragmented for over five years...

Telegraph: Challenge to Welby as traditionalist Anglicans stage 'fragmentation

Welby's 8,400-mile flying detour to stave off Anglican schism
Telegraph: Around 1,200 conservative bishops, archbishops and senior clergy from around the world are gathering in Nairobi later this month to discuss the “fragmentation” of the 77 million-strong church because of what they see as the liberal drift of some branches.

Lambeth Palace said last week that, although he had been invited, the Most Rev Justin Welby, could not attend the meeting, organised by the powerful Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans (FCA), who claim to represent around 40 million churchgoers around the world, in person but would address them by video link.

He is due to be in Iceland for an international church leaders’ gathering which had long been planned.

But, in a move seen as an olive branch to the traditionalists, it has now emerged that he is to make a detour to Kenya on his way to Iceland to meet the group’s leaders before the summit begins – adding more than 8,400 miles to his journey.

Dr Peter Jensen, general secretary of the FCA, announced the "flying visit" to meet Anglican primates ahead of the main meeting, a decision he said was "recognition" of the event's importance...

Syracuse Honor Flight Vets remove roadblock to get into Iwo Jima memorial

by Matt Mulcahy
October 5, 2013

WASHINGTON D.C. -- Late word from Washington, DC that the Central NY Veterans got into the Iwo Jima Memorial by knocking over water-filled barriers. Their three buses were then able to get in to see the landmark.

Also word that when the Honor Flight plane returns to Hancock Airport this evening, it will be met by a 'water arch' set up by National Guard and airport fire equipment. It will be visible, around 6pm, from the airport viewing area. There's free parking if you wish to go...

Compared to battling the Germans and Japanese during World War II, working around a Government shut down in Washington D.C. is a challenge easily overcome.

The dedicated group of Honor Flight Syracuse volunteers made sure this group of 64 aging veterans of World War II and the Korean War had their moment of respect and reflection. the rest
There is a big welcome home parade planned for inside Hancock Airport. It promises to be an emotional moment for the veterans and families who will come out to watch.

Obama threatens military chaplains if they minister during shutdown, Honor Flight Vets, Ben Carson Audited, Who Shut Down the Govt.?

Thomas Sowell: Who Shut Down the Government?
...The Senate chose not to vote to authorize that money to be spent, because it did not include money for ObamaCare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says that he wants a "clean" bill from the House of Representatives, and some in the media keep repeating the word "clean" like a mantra. But what is unclean about not giving Harry Reid everything he wants?

If Senator Reid and President Obama refuse to accept the money required to run the government, because it leaves out the money they want to run ObamaCare, that is their right. But that is also their responsibility.

You cannot blame other people for not giving you everything you want. And it is a fraud to blame them when you refuse to use the money they did vote, even when it is ample to pay for everything else in the government...

Why Is Obama Admin Spending Money to Close Open-Air Parks During the Gov't Shutdown?
The National Park Service appears to be unnecessarily erecting barricades during the government shutdown. Its actions have left many tourists to wonder, if the NPS can spend money keeping people out of open-air parks, why not spend that money to let people in?

There have been many reports of barricades in places that do need them, as well as reports of people removing, or circumventing the barricades. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) has said he will defy orders to close the parks in his state...

Military Priests Face Arrest for Celebrating Mass in Defiance of Shutdown
First, it was the World War II veterans who had to break down barriers to see the open air, un-attended memorial erected in their honor. A memorial which is on public land but is supported – including the National Park Service fee – with private funds. This week there was more security surrounding this memorial — just to keep elderly veterans out — than there was at our embassy in Benghazi the night it was attacked.

And for what? To inflict as much pain as possible through this government shutdown. It’s called Washington Monument Syndrome, and it’s pure political theater.

But now there’s a story just coming to light that takes things even further. According the Archdiocese for Military Services, GS and contract priests (who are paid by the federal government as independent contractors in places where there aren’t enough active-duty priests to meet the needs of Catholics in military service) are being forbidden from celebrating Mass, even on a volunteer basis...
More: Priests threatened with arrest if they minister to military during shutdown

Anglican Ink: Govt shutdown may shutter military chapels
If the government shutdown continues through the weekend, there will be no Catholic priest to celebrate Mass this Sunday in the chapels at some U.S. military installations where non-active-duty priests serve as government contractors.

Military personnel enjoy, like all Americans, the First Amendment guarantee of the “Free Exercise” of their particular religious faith. But because military personnel are considered a “captive audience,” the laws of our country require the government to provide access to that faith. This is why we have a military chaplaincy. This all becomes very clear when one thinks of a military family stationed in Bahrain or Japan. They cannot walk down the street to the local synagogue, church, mosque, etc.

There is a chronic shortage of active duty Catholic chaplains. While roughly 25% of the military is Catholic, Catholic priests make up only about 8% of the chaplain corps. That means approximately 275,000 men and women in uniform, and their families, are served by only 234 active-duty priests. The temporary solution to this shortage is to provide GS and contract priests. These men are employed by the government to ensure that a priest is available when an active duty Catholic Chaplain is not present. With the government shutdown, many GS and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer. During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so...

Why Was Dr. Ben Carson Audited After Prayer Breakfast?
Dr. Ben Carson is the latest on the growing list of conservatives targeted by the Internal Revenue Service.

The well-known neurosurgeon told The Washington Times the IRS hit him with an audit just months after his speech at the National Prayer Breakfast in which he talked about the nation’s “moral decay and fiscal irresponsibility” in front of the president.

“I guess it could be a coincidence, but I never had been audited before and never really had any encounters with the IRS,” Carson said. “But it certainly would make one suspicious because we know now the IRS has been used for political purposes and therefore actions like this come under suspicion.”...

They Seriously Just Nominated Putin for a Nobel Peace Prize?

Oct. 2, 2013
Becket Adams

Russian president and former KGB spook Vladimir Putin has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

The International Academy of Spiritual Unity and Cooperation of Peoples of the World, the group that put Putin’s name forward, made no mention in its nomination announcement of his track record of human rights abuses. The group also made no mention of the role Putin has played in selling arms to unstable and violent regimes (most notable to Syria’s Bashar Assad).

Instead, the group said Putin deserves the award because he “actively promotes settlement of all conflicts arising on the planet.”

The announcement made no mention of Putin’s role in the Second Chechnya War, which lasted more than nine years. The announcement also neglects to mention his war with Georgia. It does, however, praise him for the role he played in talking U.S. President Barack Obama out of bombing Syria...

Killing Christians; Army stores closed but Andrews golf course open; Three-Parent Babies; Christian dorms at public university

The Dangers of the Common Core Standards
Other criticisms of the Common Core Standards is that they are in fact “mediocre” levels of attainment, and represent a “one size fits all standard.” Additionally, “it will be easily politicized by societal norms … no longer will it just stick to facts … special issue groups will make sure that their issue is covered.”

The autonomy and religious liberty of Christian schools will be specifically harmed because a national standard really requires a national curriculum and a national test, Van den Berg said. These will naturally follow from national acceptance of the Common Core. The SAT, GED, and ACT are now being aligned to the Common Core, and students at Christian schools must take these tests, thus pressuring these schools to teach in alignment with the Common Core Standard. If students from Christian schools do not do well on these tests, it in turn reflects poorly on the school. Thus the autonomy of Christian schools is affected, and also their religious liberty if they are pressured to teach what is contrary to their doctrine. Credit transfers, course and credit recognition, and college admissions may be tied to a school’s adherence to the Common Core...

The Christian Dorm at the Public University
...Kosher dorms, Christian fraternity houses and specialized housing based on values have become part of modern college life. But the dorm on this campus of 7,000 students is among a new wave of religious-themed housing that constitutional scholars and others say is pushing the boundaries of how much a public university can back religion.

Officials said the dorm met a growing demand and did not conflict with the Constitution.
“It is not about proselytizing, but about bringing a values-based opportunity to this campus,” said Troy’s chancellor, Jack Hawkins Jr. “The parents are the most excited. I’ve had calls to get me to intervene to get their son or daughter in there.” ...

The Biological Colonialism of the Rich
...We already know that children born of IVF have poorer health outcomes than those conceived naturally. Yet, in the rush to allow these women to bear children, significant potential safety risks are being ignored.

Indeed, a study published in Science just revealed that three-parent mice and other organisms have significant health problems, including with “individual development, cognitive behavior, and [other] key health parameters.” The Science authors strongly recommend more studies, but go on to suggest that despite safety concerns, families with “offspring that were severely afflicted” by mitochondrial diseases could decide “take the risk” anyway.

The willingness of some to do anything to have a baby has also spurred IVF biological colonialism, by which the fertility industry exploits the gestational capacities of destitute women in developing countries to fulfill the procreative desires of the well-off...

The Brave New World of Three-Parent Babies
...There are two extremely radical and very worrying techniques which have just been given the green light in Britain. These techniques are designed to help women at risk of passing on mitochondrial disease [a group of disorders caused by cell mutations] via faulty mitochondrial genes outside the nucleus of their eggs. The aim is to help these women have children to whom they will have some kind of genetic connection — as opposed to their accepting the risk, remaining childless or choosing adoption, for example.

Both techniques create genetically modified children and will affect all the descendants of those created, in ways that could be very dangerous. But they’re also morally wrong in other ways. Because most genes are in the nucleus of our cells, supporters of the techniques argue that any change involving mitochondrial genes outside the nucleus will not affect parenthood. However, this is not the case...

Killing Christians With Impunity?
...But it turns out that the last century was the worst century ever for the persecution of Christians and martyrdom. Dr. David Barrett, a leading church statistician, says there were more Christians martyred in the 20th century than had been murdered in all previous centuries combined.

Persecution today continues to rear its ugly head in various places around the globe, such as in remnant Communist countries, like Vietnam or North Korea. But anti-Christian persecution is especially found in the Middle East and those places where the philosophy of Islamism---a supremacist form of Islam---prevails.

It’s a cliché by now, but it’s true: The Arab Spring has turned into the Christian Winter...

Insurance Manager: ‘We Have Yet To Have Someone Successfully Register On The Marketplace’
...“It’s day two of health care reform, and we have yet to have someone successfully register on the marketplace,” said Matt Hadzick, manager of a Highmark retail insurance store in Allentown, Pa., where people could go to register for the online insurance marketplace. “The registration process is very slow, and at one point it just shuts down.”...

9 Things You Should Know about Casinos and Gambling
...3. Modern slot machines are programmed for fast, continuous, and repeat betting. Players insert plastic, not coins; they tap buttons or touch a screen rather than pull levers; they place bets in denominations ranging from a penny to a hundred dollars on multiple lines that spin across a screen with each rapid tap of the button. The laws of pure chance or probability no longer dictate wins and losses on slot machines. Modern slots are hooked up to a central server that collects player information, preferences, and speed of play and has the capacity to program each machine to each player's style. The trend in slot design is to provide a slow and smooth "ride," with small wins that are less than the amount bet, but nonetheless encourage repeat bets and prolonged "time on machine."...

Ex-abortionist surrenders abortion instruments to Pope Francis
...Upon arriving in Rome, more obstacles appeared, with little chance of speaking directly to the pope. But at the last possible moment, following the pope’s speech, Oriente said he told a bishop his story. This bishop, whom he did not name, spoke directly with “Padre George,” Archbishop Georg Ganswein, who brought him before the pope “immediately, without hesitation.”

Oriente handed the package of instruments to the pope, who, he says, “gave me the mandate to evangelize the pro life [message] and to defend life itself.”

Pope Francis, he said, told him, “This evening I will pray. This [the instruments] I have to bring with me to my room to Santa Marta.”

“Then he laid his hands on me, and said, ‘You are blessed and fight for life.”

Oriente said, “The instruments of death were abandoned at the foot of the successor of Peter in the world, as death is put at the feet of Jesus in favor of life.”...
